Point b Design is a multi-discipline/multi-disciplinary studio. We are an ethical and knowledgeable group of individuals. We have found over time that the three major skill sets we use in our own design and fabrication work have some value to other design professionals and clients. Our knowledge and expertise break into three distinct consulting areas:
b.Fab: is the materials research and fabrication branch of Point b Design. Aside from the obvious of being happy to fabricate your furniture or building components, we have both an ability and a proven process of teasing out innovative materials and systems in our work. We are able to think as designers and hear as fabricators the qualitative goals of your “piece” so as to understand what you are after. This opens the door to potential increase in the value of your “piece” while reducing the cost. As an example – if one were to be open to the evolution of the materials and assebly logic while being firm in the cost constraints and the qualitative or subjective goals for a piece, then we are able to run with our process of vetting multiple design and material solutions as an option. We represent these options to you in clear form (digital model or physical mock-up) so that you can easily understand the differences between iterations/solutions.
b.Digi: is the digital side of our business. We have been fortunate in our adoption and understanding of the most advanced digital design tools and digital fabrication processes in the world. We are able to apply our understanding of these digital design tools either in service to you as develop your own projects (acting as “model manager”), or we can use our advanced digital design tools on your behalf (driving these tools so that the output is not a model but a tool to drive thousands of nested design solutions – these solutions have a wide array of output representations). We can consult with you on a broader level in the transition of your studio or office from a linear project delivery method to a more advanced integrated design delivery process. And we would be happy to assist in the development of your own digital design tools or models that you wish to develop with an eye towards digital fabrication – whether at the building scale or the furniture scale.
b.Design: We are designers and this is at the core of everything we do. We will design anything from a door knob to the entire property beyond. We have a set of fundamental concepts and processes that are clearly understood – these have evolved over a many years in a context that is unique to the industry. Our studio is often published as an example of newer models of practice and thinking. We are fortunate because we are swimming in the blue waters of materials innovation and the most advanced digital design tools available, this gives one perspective. As design consultants to other design professionals we are happy to share this perspective as you work through your design solutions. For building owners we are able to do design studies quickly and clearly that represent a wide range of solutions to a single question – often returning with what is most valuable at the programming stage of a project – a solid set of real questions to drive the program to innovative/affordable solutions.
