In many of our furniture projects we are interested in innovating new composite surfaces, CHIMERIC is one way of describing these efforts. We are attempting to make chimeric surfaces which are seemless integrations of color, surface, topography, reflection, and refraction. In the pursuit of these surfaces we call them chimeric because they end up performing well above the sum of the parts. Often times there are feedback moments teased into these surfaces so that there are phenomenon are unique.
What are we talking about? In many other studio’s furniture designs there is a quest for a composition and consideration of the innate material properties and how they will interact as assembled whole. In our studio we are in a quest for phenomenon and behavior of a piece for a purpose, for an environment, for a personality and from that point we seek out the appropriate combination of materials, color, texture, pattern, luminosity, reflection, and refraction to serve that goal. We start with th econceptual foundation and we iterate through hundreds of versions and combinations of components – digitally and physically so as to bracket and balance – phenomenon and performance.
This table is a balanced expression of a new surface development, it represents a custome evolved set of patterns, as many as 20 layers of paint in a built up piece of art. a deep refractive layer of high polished resin table is a custom designed and fabricated piece for a smaller dining room. The charge was to make a table that 99% of the year functioned as a piece of art. This piece is a custom designed pattern and topography carved into the wood top – it represents hundreds of versions of the geometry and pattern of the top.( It is 54″ round 34″ high)
